The terms.

You keep everything you draw. We charge once for the tool, and the font that comes out is yours to use, sell and modify without asking us.

01WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH

Pothooks is run by Dan Billson, a sole trader in the United Kingdom. There is no company: Dan Billson is personally the other party to this agreement. Anything you need to raise — a fault, a refund, a data request, a legal notice — goes to dan@dnbls.com.

Payments are not taken by us. Polar Software Inc. is the merchant of record for every sale, which means they are the seller on your receipt, they charge and remit the VAT or sales tax, and their name is what appears on your card statement. We never see your card details.

02WHAT THE SERVICE IS

Pothooks turns handwriting into a font file. You draw each character in a browser, the app derives outlines and spacing from those strokes, and it assembles OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 files you can install and use anywhere.

Drawing, previewing and editing are free and unlimited. Payment is asked for once, at the download, per font.

There is also a shop, at /store, selling two typefaces we drew ourselves. Those are ordinary retail fonts and are covered by their own licence — see clause 5 — rather than by the terms that apply to a font you make here.

03YOUR ACCOUNT

You can use Pothooks without an account — work is kept in your browser. Signing in with your email address syncs that work to our server so it reaches your other devices, and is how a purchase is recorded against you.

There is no password. We email a six-digit code instead. Keep access to your email secure: anyone who can read it can sign in as you. Tell us if you think that has happened.

A font drawn while signed out is claimed by the first account that syncs it. That is what lets you try the tool before signing up, and it means you should not sync a font you drew on someone else’s device unless you mean to own it.

04WHAT YOU DRAW IS YOURS

Your handwriting is yours. Nothing in these terms transfers any ownership of it to us, and we do not claim any interest in the fonts you make.

To run the service we need permission to do the obvious mechanical things with what you draw: store it, copy it between your devices, and process it into outlines and font files. You give us that permission, for that purpose, for as long as you keep the work on our server, and for nothing else. We do not use your handwriting to train anything, we do not show it to anyone, and we do not sell it.

You are responsible for what you draw. Do not trace a font you have no right to trace, and do not upload handwriting that is not yours to use.

05WHAT BUYING GETS YOU

One payment of £12 buys a perpetual licence to the font files built from one font project — every weight, every format, and every future re-export of it. The full grant ships as LICENCE.txt inside the download, and it says this:

WEIGHTS
REGULAR · BOLD
FORMATS
OTF · WOFF · WOFF2
COMMERCIAL USE
INCLUDED
REDISTRIBUTE & RESELL
INCLUDED
ATTRIBUTION
NOT REQUIRED
RE-EXPORTS
UNLIMITED, FREE
FILES YOU DOWNLOADED
NEVER REVOKED
VAT AND SALES TAX
INCLUDED

Two things it does not cover. It licenses the font files, not Pothooks itself — you cannot resell access to the tool. And it is per font project: a second font is a second payment.

Files you have downloaded are never revoked. If this service disappears tomorrow, the fonts on your machine keep working, and the licence above continues to apply to them.

A font bought from the shop is different. The two typefaces at /store were drawn by us, not by you, so buying one licenses it rather than handing it over: unlimited personal and commercial use, desktop and web, no seat count and no attribution, but no redistributing or reselling the files. The full text is at the font licence, and it also ships as LICENCE.txt inside that download. Everything else in this clause — perpetual, irrevocable, never revoked — applies to it too.

06PRICE AND PAYMENT

The price is £12, once, per font you make. A typeface from the shop is £6, or £10 for both. Where Polar Software Inc. can present a price in your own currency it will, and the amount shown at checkout — including any VAT or sales tax due where you live — is the amount you pay.

We can change the price of new purchases at any time. A change never affects a font you have already bought, and never turns a one-off payment into a recurring one.

07CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS

Because the font files are digital content delivered to you immediately, the statutory 14-day right to cancel is lost the moment the download begins — but only if you have agreed to that. So, in plain terms, this is what you are agreeing to at checkout:

You ask for the font files to be supplied immediately, and you accept that once the download has started you lose the right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.

That is the legal floor, not our policy. We refund more readily than that, and the refund policy sets out when and how. Nothing in these terms affects your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if what you bought is faulty or not as described.

08WHAT WE DO NOT PROMISE

Pothooks is provided as it is. We do not promise it will be available without interruption, that it will be free of bugs, or that a font it builds will suit a particular purpose. Type design is a craft, and the tool does not make that judgement for you.

Keep your own copy of anything you care about. The download is the durable artefact, and it is the one we suggest you treat as the original.

09LIABILITY

Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow to be limited — and if you are a consumer, your statutory rights stand whatever this section says.

Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profit, business or goodwill, or for work you did not keep a copy of; and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us for the font it concerns.

10ENDING IT

You can stop using Pothooks whenever you like, and delete your account by emailing dan@dnbls.com. We may suspend or close an account that is being used to break the law or to attack the service.

If we close your account, the licences you have already bought survive, and so do the files you have already downloaded.

11CHANGES, AND WHICH LAW APPLIES

We may change these terms. The date at the top of this page is when the current wording took effect, and a change never applies retrospectively to a font you have already bought. If a change matters to you and you disagree with it, stop using the service — your existing files and licences are unaffected.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere in the UK or the EU, you keep the protection of the mandatory law of the country you live in, and can bring proceedings there.
